Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin lifted the lid on his recent injury scare and shared that it had him fearing the worst.

The 25-year-old right-back knocked the ball away during a one-on-one challenge in the 2-1 defeat courtesy of Tottenham in his side’s first Premier League fixture of the 2018/19 campaign.

The defender appeared to land awkwardly and looked like he may have suffered a serious injury but he ended up just missing the Magpies’ clash with Cardiff City due to the incident.

Yedlin whose current Magpies deal sees him rake in £30,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac) revealed that the club’s doctors originally told him the incident looked bad.

“As soon as it happened, I thought it’s going to be bad,” said Yedlin in an interview with Goal.

“The doc actually came in after and said ‘I’m just going to be quite blunt with you, just based on the video it looked pretty bad’. I hadn’t seen the video then.

“I was just hoping that it wasn’t swollen in the morning.

“Luckily when I woke up, it really wasn’t swollen at all. I went to get an MRI and got the results back and it showed that there was literally nothing. I’m not really sure what happened, but I’m thankful for whatever helped save it and hopefully nothing like that happens again, knock on wood.”

OPINION

It seems Yedlin had a bit of injury scare when he went down against Tottenham and he wasn’t alone in fearing the worst. As soon as the right-back hit the deck, Magpies supporters were concerned about their star missing significant game time due to how important he is to Rafa Benitez’s side. The 25-year-old is head and shoulders above the other options Benitez has to play at right-back and it would be devastating if the Magpies manager had to cope without him for a period of time. Luckily for the Spanish boss, Yedlin and fans of the Magpies, the defender was given the all clear relatively quickly and soon got back to performing for the club. The 25-year-old even managed to score a rare goal on his return to the side against Manchester City which nearly stole point from the match against last season’s league champions. Hopefully Yedlin won’t be handed anymore injury scares this season as the thought of him being stuck on the sidelines is a worrying thought for everyone at St James Park.
