Some Newcastle United fans grumbled on Twitter after watching Kevin Mbabu dazzle for Swiss side Young Boys in the Champions League against Manchester United on Wednesday.
The speedy right-back ,who joined the Magpies in 2015 before leaving in the summer of 2017 to join the Swiss giants, put in an impressive display against Man United in his latest outing despite his side losing 3-0.
Mbabu’s performance had Magpies supporters moaning about how the club had let him go with one even saying that while they love Rafa Benitez, the Spanish manager clearly made a mistake with the defender.

Love people having a meltdown cause we let mbabu go for 250k, if he’d gone for 250M we’d still only have 12p to spend! #NUFC

#NUFC fans watching Man Utd game. Yes we did let Mbabu go for free and bought Manquillo for 4 million. Still pains me to this day. Can see Pedro peeking out his pocket still

We had Mbabu, and now have Manquillo. Couldn’t get anymore Newcastle United if you tried.

Who else is hurting watching #Mbabu ?? I love Rafa but letting him go was surely a mistake, he proved how good he was. Scouted by plenty of top teams since. #NUFC #YBMU

OPINION
Newcastle supporters can’t help but keep one eye on how Mbabu is doing especially when he is excelling on such a prestigious stage. The 23-year-old was hit by injuries constantly at St James Park and only managed to make five appearances for the senior side during his time with them. Magpies fans probably wouldn’t be fussed over an ex-player of theirs do so well if the club clearly didn’t look like they’d benefit for him. However the full-back position at the Magpies, is one of the weakest areas of the team as Benitez really does not have depth in numbers. It’s easy to imagine Mbabu not only being fantastic cover at the club but slotting into the first-team given how much he has improved since leaving. The other reason why Magpies fans appear to be struggling to watch him dazzle away from the club is due to them not selling him for a big fee. However as one fan tweeted, if the club had sold him for £250million then even then their side probably wouldn’t spent a respectable amount replacing him.
