A large section of Newcastle United supporters have been reacting on social media on Tuesday to the news that owner Mike Ashley is ready to lower his asking price for the club.
A report from the Shields Gazette claims that Ashley is willing to negotiate the sale of the Magpies for around £300million, £80million below his original target.
However Newcastle fans have expressed doubt over the validity of this update, with many of them pouring cold water on the idea of Ashley selling any time soon.

The only thing that news of Mike Ashley willing to sell #NUFC for £300 million, should do is to increase the intensity of the protests 10 fold.

OPINION
Is anyone surprised by the Newcastle fans’ reaction to this news? They’re all desperate to see Ashley sell the club but they’ve been burnt too many times before, most notably with the Amanda Staveley negotiations in January of this year. Until there is some official news on any negotiations for the sale of the club, the supporters will remain doubtful, and who can blame them? You get used to things after a while, and Magpies fans’ familiarity with Ashley’s tyrannical regime is all too real. They want out but Ashley seems willing to remain in charge until the club stops making him money. However, if it’s true that he’s willing to lower his asking price then there may be some hope yet for everyone on Tyneside. There’s a long way to go, and it’s sensible to remain sceptical at this stage, but this is at least some good news about Ashley’s ownership at last.
