A number of Newcastle United supporters have slammed Ayoze Perez for his listless display in the team’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Magpies’ wait for a Premier League victory goes on after the two teams couldn’t be separated at Selhurst Park, and Perez, on a reported £45,000-per-week at St James’ Park [Source: Spotrac], did little to break the deadlock.
The Newcastle faithful were clearly less than impressed with the Spaniard’s efforts, with many of them calling for him to be dropped after yet another underwhelming performance.

Needs dropping. Time to give Muto a run of games.,

He’s way to easy to push off the ball. Being in Muto asap

He’s too lightweight and cant ride a tackle for love nor money! He can be good in front of goal if he gets the right pass put that isn’t enough.

Fernández was the bright spot in a poor performance tbh. Perez needs benched for a couple games with his terrible attitude and give Muto a chance to prove himself. The problem with our club was the FCB sitting in the stand with his little fat henchmen #NUFC

A decent point but very few positives to take from that performance. Shelvey and Lascelles were our stand out performers but Perez and Kennedy were very poor, getting caught on the ball or giving it away sloppily on numerous occasions. Big improvement needed for Leicester. #NUFC

OPINION
This was simply more of the same for Perez. It’s frustrating because he has shown in the past that he has the talent to be an important player for the club, but he seems unable to perform to a high level on a weekly basis. Inconsistency is the buzzword for Perez at the moment, although his good displays seem to be coming more and more irregularly. Rafael Benitez seems to favour him, he starts him often enough, but there needs to come a point where if you continue to play poorly then you simply don’t play. No player is untouchable, and Perez hasn’t shown anywhere near enough of late for that to be the case for him. Ultimately Benitez is cursed by not having many options. Perez is almost starting by necessity these days, although as many Newcastle fans have said, perhaps it’s time to see summer signing Yoshinori Muto in his place? One thing’s for sure, though, Perez cannot go on like this.
