Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon has urged his team mate’s to remain positive despite the club’s poor start to the season.

A 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday made in three losses in succession for Rafael Benitez’s side, while they have yet to win a game in the Premier League so far this term.

The 6’1″ Venezuelan is undeterred, however: “We have to keep going – that is the only way to change the situation,” he told the Chronicle. “The confidence is the most important thing in this sport.

“We just have to start not conceding goals and continue our positive performances, our positive things, and keep looking forward.”

He makes it sound so straightforward, doesn’t he? ‘Just stay positive lads, everything will work out.’ It’s not going to be quite so simple for Newcastle to dig themselves out of their current hole, though. Performances have been below par, and the club as a whole needs to improve drastically. The fixture list has been unkind, giving them Tottenham, Chelsea and City as three of their four opening opponents, but you’d have expected better from the Magpies regardless. Benitez’s tactics have been a tacit acknowledgement that his team aren’t good enough to have a go against the big boys. He believes it wiser to try and set up shop and grind out a draw if possible. It hasn’t worked for him, and the club remains without a win as a result. Rondon’s reference to positive performances is slightly bizarre in that respect, as the team’s displays have been anything but positive lately. However, there remains plenty of time for Newcastle to turn things around, and it all starts for them after the international break.
