A section of Newcastle United supporters have been reacting on social media to defender Fabian Schar’s performance for Switzerland against England on Tuesday.
The 6’1″ Magpie [Source: Transfermarkt] played the full 90 minutes as his Swiss team came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline at the King Power Stadium.
The 26-year-old didn’t particularly produce anything of note, but he did enough for Newcastle fans to urge Rafael Benitez to start him against Arsenal on Saturday.

Lemme tell you who came out of that game with a lot of credit – Fabian Schar
Very enjoyable to watch on the ball (until he shanks one in his own net awsy at Everton or something)

Schar is brilliant on the ball and can certainly pick a pass, a good Lejuene replacement… His defending is less impressive though! #NUFC

That Schar has a touch of the Phillippes about him. Now if only he can score two from open play at Man City..

OPINION
The reaction to Schar’s performance is slightly curious, as the Swiss international didn’t do anything particularly amazing on Tuesday night. He produced a solid display and showed that he was good on the ball, but other than that? Not too much to get excited about. There is some acknowledgement amongst the Newcastle support that Schar is not the best pure defender, but his technical ability somewhat makes up for it. He’s similar to Chelsea’s David Luiz in that way. If Newcastle persist with their five man defence against Arsenal on Saturday then Schar should definitely be included, as his defensive frailties will be covered for the most part by Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles. Certainly he appears to be a better bet than Ciaran Clark, as one Magpies fan attest to. It was a decent showing from the 26-year-old, and he’ll be keen to build on it with his club side in the coming weeks.
