Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker has joked about the sighting of Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley at the clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Magpies registered their second 0-0 result of the Premier League season and shared the spoils with Palace, which now brings them up to two points for this campaign.

However, there was one thing that Lineker joked about in regards to the fixture – and that was the appearance of Ashley, who watched Newcastle in action at Selhurst Park for the first time since May 2017.

The well-known pundit aimed a jibe at the owner, saying he would have “wished he hadn’t” attended the match on Saturday afternoon.

“Mike Ashley watched his first game in 18 months I think, but I bet he wished he hadn’t,” he told the Match of the Day programme on Saturday night.

OPINION

Everybody must have been surprised to see Ashley put in a shock appearance at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon. He has not attended a match since May 2017 and it remains to be seen why he chose to go watch a game when Newcastle are on a bad run of form. It is no wonder that he got booed by some fans, who have certainly not been pleased with his ownership of the club lately. Newcastle are yet to get a victory on the board, and what Ashley witnessed on the pitch was essentially all of his own doing. His lack of funding prevented Rafa Benitez from bringing in the players that he wanted, so he should not be shocked that what he saw was rather poor. Some would hope that this would convince him to part ways with more of his cash in the January transfer window – but the likeliood of that happening is not very high.
