Alan Shearer instantly took to Twitter in order to celebrate Newcastle United taking a point from their clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Magpies icon panned the quality of the game via his personal Twitter account by stating he knew which match would feature last on BBC’s Match of the Day before saying it was a good point for his former side.

Rafa Benitez’s side drew 0-0 with Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday in order to put another point on the board for this season.

OPINION

While the Magpies’ performance probably didn’t please Shearer, he’s right to be thankful for his side taking a point from Saturday’s game. Palace had several opportunities to grab the win against Benitez’s team as the Magpies struggled to put in a good performance. Several of the Magpies key players let their side’s down and on any other day, Palace probably would have recorded a comfortable win. Due to this, in hindsight, the Magpies should be celebrating getting a point as in reality they should have left Selhurst Park emptied handed. However the Magpies have to get better sooner rather than later as it would be very disappointing if they found themselves in a relegation battle this season. Benitez did well to guide his side to a top ten finish in the 2017/18 campaign but all his good work will be forgotten about if they struggle to compete in the Premier League this season. Shearer may be happy with a point on this occasion but he won’t be so optimistic if the Magpies don’t rack up their first win soon.
