Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has branded the comments of Ian ‘Moose’ Abrahams about the city of Newcastle as ‘unacceptable’.

The talkSPORT boradcaster delivered a rant recently about there being nothing to do in Newcastle except go to football games, while Danny Murphy agreed with Abrahams’s stance that Newcastle aren’t a big club.

Now Elliot, on a reported £25,000-per-week at St James’ Park [Source: Spotrac], has had his say on his personal twitter account.

“This is way off, one of the greatest supported clubs in Premier League and Championship history, despite [not] winning any trophies (most clubs have to win one to achieve this),” he said.

“But to disrespect the area is unacceptable, one of best places to live in the country.”

OPINION

Abrahams’s comments have really struck a nerve with everyone connected with Newcastle United Football Club and Newcastle as a city. It’s hardly surprising that that’s the case, though. The reporter insulted an entire region, saying that there is nothing to do in Newcastle except attend football matches – which is a simply ridiculous statement to make. Newcastle is a beautiful city with plenty of shops, bars and landmarks. The only reasonable assumption to make is that Abrahams has never actually ventured that far north. However, he is correct about Newcastle not being a big club. They don’t challenge for trophies or European football so they simply cannot be considered a big club. The fact is, there are just six big clubs in the Premier League these days: Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle and Everton are on the precipice, the next tier below those top six, but they still are not big clubs in this day and age.
