Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez could potentially quit the club come the end of this season if one thing is not changed, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on its website that the Spaniard will quit St James’ Park is there is not a sudden change in the club’s spending policy, but there is no indications that he will get what he wants, despite him only having around nine months left on his current contract.

Benitez has previously said that he would review his position at the club come January, but it is not that likely that money will be made available for him to bring players in during the next transfer window.

The Magpies have so far failed to register a win in the Premier League, and only have one point on the board after five league games.

OPINION

This report is sure to leave most – if not all – of the club faithful sweating buckets. Benitez has been one of the best managers that the club have had, and the fact that he could leave at the end of the season if the spending policy is not changed will leave them very concerned indeed. Guiding them to a tenth place finish last term upon their return to the top flight was a fantastic achievement, and he has clearly demonstrated that he is more than capable of working with the limited resources that he has been provided with. If anybody can lead Newcastle to relative success this season, it is Benitez and the vast amount of experience that he has under his belt. The club would not be where they are now if were not for him – they could be still stuck in the Championship if it were not for his guidance – so they need to ensure that one of their most important figures pledges his future on Tyneside.
