A section of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to praise defender DeAndre Yedlin despite his own goal in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The United mainstay diverted a low shot from the Blues’ Marco Alonso, which gave them the lead after Eden Hazard initially put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot.

This clash was the United States international’s first game back after sustaining an injury in the season opener against Tottenham, which caused him to miss last weekend’s draw with Cardiff City.

The majority of Magpies’ supporters remained upbeat despite this costly error by the 25-year-old right-back, consoling the player with comments including “so unlucky for Yedlin” and “got to feel for Yedlin.”

OPINION

Despite Yedlin’s own goal ensuring Chelsea took all three points away from this clash, the Newcastle fans here – bar one – have remained upbeat and fairly sympathetic for the defender after his costly error. In the first half, the American performed well, and he was obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time to divert Alonso’s shot in. It is surprising not to see some fans lay into Yedlin following this mistake, especially now that they have only taken one point from their last three games. It has been a frustrating period for them, and they could have earned a point from this fixture if it were not for Yedlin’s own goal. He did not deserve to be criticised as he is an integral figure in the first team, and you could tell that his presence was missed on the pitch in last weekend’s match with Cardiff. However, Yedlin will need to put out a flawless performance in their next game to prove to some fans that he will not make the same mistake again. Nevertheless, it was good to see some supporters back their mainstay.
