Some Newcastle United reacted on social media as Rafa Benitez opted to start Joselu upfront against Tottenham on Saturday.

The Magpies manager’s decision caused fans to quickly respond to the news of the 28-year-old Spanish centre-forward starting by tweeting such things as ‘Are you kidding me?’ and one even claimed that the attacker was stealing a living.

Joselu has played a grand total of 32 times for the Magpies since joining them from Stoke City last summer but has only managed to score four goals in his outings.

Nothing But Newcastle has rounded up some of the best tweets about the Magpies’ first starting line-up of the new Premier League season:

OPINION

It should be no surprise that Joselu is starting as Benitez hardly got the deals he needed to be done in time this summer in order for the 28-year-old not to start the first game of the new season. While fans may be clearly unimpressed to see the Spanish attacker hopefully he is able to put their minds at ease quickly in the game by starting fast as it may boost his confidence which will allow him to deliver a memorable performance which will send fans home happy. It’s amusing that one fan even suggests Joselu starting is Benitez making a point about the club’s failure to sign the necessary players to improve his squad as hopefully that isn’t the case. It’s worth noting that while the Magpies have lost their last two encounters to Tottenham, they may have real chance of getting at least a point against them today. Mauricio Pochettino’s failed to sign anyone in the summer transfer window and they are missing several players due to their participation in the World Cup’s latter stages which means the Magpies have a golden opportunity to start their 2018/19 Premier League campaign on a good note.
