Newcastle United have got serious concerns after defender DeAndre Yedlin sustained an injury towards the end of their season opener against Tottenham on Saturday, according to the Chronicle.

The Magpies suffered a 2-1 loss to the hands of Spurs in their first game of the season, and that was further tainted as the first-teamer hobbled out of St James’ Park on crutches.

United are concerned over another major injury blow as fellow defender Florian Lejeune is currently sidelined with a knee problem, and it now looks like Yedlin is likely to miss the next clash against Cardiff City this weekend as well.

Newcastle are not holding out for a quick recovery for the United States international as he continues to be assessed, with the club expecting to give an update on his situation soon.

OPINION

Yedlin’s injury is bound to be a major blow for Rafa Benitez, as his defence now looks massively exposed after failing to recruit any cover. He now has to call upon the inexperienced Javier Manquillo and Jamie Sterry to make an appearance in the side during Yedlin’s absence, which is undoubtedly a scenario he was not hoping to be in after the first game of the season. The right-back’s injury looks rather serious as it was said he was not able to put weight on his right leg, needing help to get to and from the dressing room. It will be interesting to see how his temporary replacement performs in the next game, and Benitez will have to be careful after losing a key part of his back four. His presence on the field will be missed for in the time he is sidelined, and Benitez is most likely regretting not bringing in another player sooner.
