Serie A club Genoa have identified Newcastle United left-back Achraf Lazaar as a potential replacement for Diego Laxalt, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian journalist reports on his website that the top-tier outfit want the 26-year-old at the club in a last-ditch raid before the Italian transfer window shuts on Friday, as World Cup star Laxalt could be heading for Milan.

Lazaar has not been a regular feature over the past couple of seasons for United, spending the last campaign on loan at now Serie B club Benevento Calcio, where he only made nine appearances all season.

He made the move to Tyneside in 2016 and was rarely-used in the Championship, making only four appearances for the club in their league-winning season of 2016/2017.

OPINION

A move away from Newcastle looks to be Lazaar’s best bet at the moment, as it does not look like he features in boss Rafa Benitez’ plans for the upcoming season. A move to Italy would be ideal fit for him, as he is used to playing in the Italian top flight with his former loane club. It will not benefit him getting next to no game time under Benitez, and Genoa must advance on their interest in the Morocco international before their window shuts on Friday. During his two year stint at St James’ Park, Lazaar has not made a solid impact on the team nor has he improved it in any way. Benitez may be exposed in the full-back position now DeAndre Yedlin is injured, but it does not seem likely that he would want Lazaar having a shot at the first team. He must now accept that he his Newcastle days are coming to an end, and hope that Genoa make a move for him soon.
