Newcastle United defender Josef Yarney has joined League Two side Morecambe on loan for six months.

The fourth-tier outfit confirmed the arrival of the 20-year-old centre-back via both their Twitter account and official website, with the youngster not yet having made his senior debut in football before making the temporary move.

The young defender arrived at the club last summer on a free transfer after his contract with Everton came to an end, and has since made 20 appearances for United’s under-20 side during the 2017/2018 season.

He is now set to star for the Shrimps until early next year after making several appearances in boss Rafa Benitez’ side during pre-season.

OPINION

At the age of 20-years-old, Yarney has not had not yet had the chance to prove himself in senior football. Joining a team like Morecambe on loan will help him achieve that aim, as he is likely to be getting regular first-team minutes. Playing most weeks will help him improve his confidence, and that he is capable of playing at a senior level. It may only be a fourth-tier team, but he was not likely to be getting regular football any where else – and starring for Morecambe is better than not featuring at all. Morecambe sit last in League Two at the moment after being thumped 6-0 by Crewe Alexandra on the opening day, and the addition of Yarney into their back line would provide the stability to prevent embarrassing score lines such as these again. This will be a welcome boost to Morecambe, and Yarney will undoubtedly be hoping that he can help the team climb up the table and steer clear of the bottom.
