Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has made a last-ditch appeal to the board regarding the club’s transfers ahead of deadline day, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on their website that the Magpies manager has made one last plea to the board regarding the club’s transfers, saying that if they do not act now to fill the gaps in the squad, then they will be taking a major risk.

The Spaniard has highlighted the threats of not landing another left-back and centre back to cover Paul Dummett and the injured Florian Lejeune, with new signing Kenedy may be having to be used on the left-side as defensive cover if no one is found.

However, Benitez does not know if the club’s hierarchy will listen to his final warning as deadline day looms.

OPINION

The situation at Newcastle is becoming very dire indeed, and it is a possibility that Benitez’ plea may fall on deaf ears. So far in this transfer window, he has not had much freedom in who he has wanted to bring in due to a low budget, and now there is a risk no more players will be brought in to provide cover in the defence. Benitez does not have much to work with as it is, and the fact he may have to use Kenedy as left-sided defensive cover if no one is signed as a back-up to Dummett, is not ideal – it would then mean he has less options out wide. Whether the club’s hierarchy will listen to his final warning will remain to be seen, but Benitez undoubtedly does not want to be in position where he is using players out of their usual positions. He will have his fingers crossed that they do take notice – but he should not get his hopes up.
