Newcastle United midfielder Rolando Aarons is being eyed in a potential swoop by Rangers, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on their website that Gers boss Steven Gerrard, a legend for Liverpool and in the Premier League, is plotting a last ditch raid on Newcastle in order to add the 22-year-old to his ranks ahead of Scotland’s transfer deadline on Friday.

However, the newspaper also claims that Newcastle have two other clubs battling for the signature of the 5″9 [Transfermarkt] left-sided flyer, in the shapes of Hull City and AEK Athens.

Aarons has been largely out of favour with Magpies’ boss Rafa Benitez, spending the 2017/2018 campaign on loan at Serie A side Hellas Verona.

He has only made 18 appearances in the Premier League since joining Newcastle in 2012.

OPINION

Rafa Benitez needs to make a decision on where Aarons’ next destination will be as the deadline is drawing ever closer. The rarely-used attacker does not feature in his plans for the season, and was unlikely to usurp the likes of Kenedy, Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu for a place in the attacking midfield. Having made only 18 appearances since joining eight years ago, it is difficult to understand why United do not want to offload him on a permanent basis rather than just on loan, as the report states that Benitez is willing to let him leave temporarily. Aarons is clearly unfavoured, so the wise move would be to cash in on him once the January transfer window opens in a few months time, rather than let him go on loan in the next few days. It is pointless keeping a player on the books who does not offer anything to the club, but it worse comes to worse, then they need to bin him in this window.
