BBC Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker has poked fun at Newcastle United after their 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs proved victorious in this season opener, with goals coming from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli securing the win after United attempted to fight back with a goal from Joselu in the 11th minute.

Former Tottenham striker Lineker praised Spurs for making a winning start to the season without making any more new signings, whereas he poked fun at the Magpies, saying that their losing display showed that they do need signings in order to have a winning start.

“Tottenham showing that you don’t need loads of new signings to have a winning start to the season. Meanwhile Newcastle showing that you do need loads of signings to have a winning start to the season,”  he said on his personal Twitter account in an instant reaction to the result.

OPINION

Gary Lineker has been rather harsh on Newcastle here following their defeat to his former club. They did not by any means play badly or embarrass themselves, and they were in fact very unlucky not to secure a point against one of the best teams in the league. Yes, Tottenham have proved that you do not need to make a flurry of signings to make a positive start in the Premier League – but Newcastle have also proved that you can still recruit well despite a lack of backing from the owners. United had a lot of chances to get back into the game – namely Kenedy’s miss which could have made the game 2-2 – but Spurs were too much for them in the end as they hung on to win the game. Newcastle will definitely bounce back from this result – but Lineker is wrong in saying that they need “loads of signings” to get off to a winning start. It may not have been the result Toon fans were after – but they still have the rest of the season to prove themselves.
