Newcastle are interested in signing former defender Kevin Mbabu along with five other clubs, according to Marca.

The Spanish outlet reports on their website that the Magpies are following the 23-year-old right-sided enforcer along with five other sides, who include Real Betis, Valencia, Fulham, Girona and Real Sociedad.

The right-back left the Tyneside club in 2017 for Swiss club Young Boys, and it appears that United are interested in a reunion with the defender, as boss Rafa Benitez looks to make some last-minute improvements to the squad ahead of the transfer window deadline.

OPINION

This interest in Kevin Mbabu is one that Benitez will be hoping to sustain ahead of the transfer deadline. He needs defensive back-up now that Florian Lejeune is sidelined at the moment, and Mbabu would represent a great addition to the squad. He is a versatile player that can play anywhere along the back-line, an asset which will be of great use to Benitez when he has players injured. Having a player who can operate in various positions in the defence is one who they should be seriously considering a bid for. The club already know what he is capable of during his four-year spell at St James’ Park, and he is definitely not a risk for Benitez. Signing a player whose ability is already known to the Magpies will be majorly beneficial, as it will be easy to gauge his playing style and where he will fit in amongst the team. Benitez needs to move, and fast – as he has five other clubs in a fierce battle for Mbabu’s signature as well.
