Newcastle United have reignited their hunt for Swansea centre-back Federico Fernandez ahead of Thursday’s deadline, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon

Nixon, football correspondent for The Sun, reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning that the Magpies were once again attempting to negotiate a deal for the 6ft 3in Argentina international [Transfermarkt].

It is said that the deal would take the form of a permanent transfer, although Swansea’s asking price is currently higher than the amount that Newcastle are willing to pay for the enforcer.

OPINION

Fernandez had been a key target for Benitez a few weeks ago, but the deal looked dead in the water as the two clubs failed to come to any kind of agreement. It seems however that Newcastle have now renewed their attempts to sign the 29-year-old, with deadline day looming over them. Benitez is known to want to bring in two defenders before tomorrow’s cut off, and Fernandez is obviously one of those he wants to sign. The Argentina international has never shone too brightly for Swansea during his time in the Premier League, but Benitez knows him well from their time at Napoli together, and obviously believes he can add something to the squad. Before that happens however there looks to be a big obstacle in his way, with Swansea seemingly unmoving on their valuation of the enforcer, who has spent four years at the club since a £8million move in 2014.
