Paul Merson has predicted Newcastle United and Tottenham’s game on Saturday at St James Park to end as a 0-0 draw.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that the Magpies’ game with Spurs was a hard one to predict as the London club was dealing with players not being ready to feature due to the World Cup earlier in the summer.

Merson proceeded to praise Magpies boss Rafa Benitez by stating that he will make his side hard to beat and backed them to get a draw against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“This is a tough one,” admitted Merson in his predictions for Sky Sports.

“This was an early game last year, and Spurs got a couple of late goals, but I feel they’ll find it hard due to the World Cup.

“Spurs just haven’t got their players back. Rafa Benitez will make them hard to beat. Spurs won’t have the goals early on so Newcastle will hold on this year, I’m going for a goalless draw.”

OPINION

This is one of the most interesting fixtures of the opening weekend of the Premier League as both sets of supporters are disappointed following the club’s transfer window. While Magpies fans will point out how several more signings needed to be made this summer in order to strengthen their club’s squad at least new faces arrived. Spurs made no major signings in the latest transfer window and are set to take on the new season with the squad that served them very well in their 2017/18 campaign. While Spurs didn’t need several signings brought in due to already having a strong team available to them, given that several players are missing on Saturday after featuring in the later stages of the World Cup, the Magpies have a real opportunity to take some points from the match. Hopefully this will be the case as Benitez needs points on the board as soon as possible due to the Magpies having a tough-set of fixtures to start their 2018/19 campaign.
