Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney is being eyed for a return to Scunthorpe United, according to the Grimsby Telegraph.

The regional newspaper reports on their website that the 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) loanee star is wanted by the League One side, who he spent the majority of last season on loan to.

The Grimsby Telegraph claim that the 22-year-old – who scored 14 goals in 2017/2018 – would help to bolster a front line that has been lacking the required fire power in their recent games.

Toney has not been a part of Toon boss Rafa Benitez’ plans for the Spaniard’s time in the St James’ Park dugout, having spent all his time out on loan.

OPINION

Ivan Toney has spent the last year on loan at both Scunthorpe and Wigan, so it comes as no surprise that Scunthorpe are keen on taking him back once again. His goal tally only goes to cement their interest in him, and Newcastle are in a position where they could cash in on him on a permanent basis. He clearly does not feature in Benitez’ plans, so there must be no other option than to offload him permanently. There is no point loaning him out time and time again, especially when the Magpies are in need of the funds to bolster their squad further. The youngster would be a fantastic addition to Scunthorpe, and Benitez may regret letting him go if he goes on to improve his current goal tally – particularly as he wants to enhance United’s attack. By the looks of things, Toney could be on his way out at Newcastle, but that will potentially be Scunthorpe’s gain.
