Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Swansea for the signing of defender Federico Fernandez, according to the Sun.

The outlet claim that a £6millon fee has been agreed between the two clubs for the central defender as Rafael Benitez looks to strengthen his defence.

The pair worked together at Italian club Napoli, with Benitez keen to bring in cover for the injured defender Florian Lejeune, who is out for the long-term future with a knee injury which required surgery.

The Argentine defender has made 128 appearances for the Swans, scoring two goals, and is a proven Premier League player.

OPINION

Finally, some good news for the Newcastle United fans and manager Rafael Benitez. After the frustrations that the Spaniard has endured this summer in the transfer market, it looks like the owner has finally stepped up on the last day of the window to bring in that vital defender that Benitez badly needs. The Argentine proved in his time in the Premier League with Swansea that he belongs in this division and will bring calmness and solidity to the Toon backline should they sign him this summer. Even though the fee has been agreed, personal terms and a medical still need to be completed, so Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley might well mess up this transfer yet Magpies fans. The central defender will be a good signing but he’s just replacing an injured player, to actually strengthen their squad, they’ll need to do a lot more before the window shuts.
