Newcastle United have recently brought in midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung on a free transfer in an attempt to bolster the position, but he needs a quality partner to link up with in the middle of the park.

Boss Rafa Benitez does not have much money to work with, but one option that he must consider is Roma midfielder Maxime Gonalons.

Italian newspaper Il Tempo have reported in their print edition (04/08) that West Ham have joined Crystal Palace and Everton in the race for the 6″2 (source: Transfermarkt) enforcer – however, the Magpies need swoop for him themselves in order to provide the perfect partner to Ki.

Ki is experienced in the Premier League having played for the recently relegated Swansea, and adding Gonalons to link-up with him is the best option to unleash his potential upon returning to the top-flight.

The fact that the Frenchman has a trio of clubs after his signature shows just how sought after he is – and if United snapped him up from under the noses of all three of their rivals, they are sure to reap the rewards.

Gonalons would be the rock in Newcastle’s midfield, and his hard-working nature would ensure that his partnership with Ki works like clockwork.

Having two players in the midfield with a vast amount of top level experience between them would make them a formidable force in the middle of the park, and the impact they could potentially make would be significant, seeming as many games are lost and won in the middle of the park.

It will be a hard feat to beat the likes of West Ham – who have spent big this summer – to land his services, but Newcastle have the lure of a repeat top-ten finish on the cards.

Now Benitez must sideswipe his rivals and pounce for the midfielder.
