Even though Newcastle United need full-back cover, they have no need to keep a player who has only made a string of appearances for the club.

That player is left-back Moroccan international Achraf Lazaar, who could be joining Serie A club Genoa by this Friday after Gianluca Di Marzio reported that the Italians are keen on snapping him up.

However, they only have two days to complete a deal, with the Italian transfer window ending on Friday, and Newcastle must hurry things along – otherwise they could be stuck with the 26-year-old until the next transfer window.

This is a scenario that they do not want to find themselves in, as Lazaar is a player who has had very little impact on the team since his arrival in 2016.

United need to push the Moroccan international out of the exit as quickly as possible, or Benitez will be forced to use in him in the first team until January comes around.

Staying with the Magpies would only spell misery for the defender, and it is best for both parties that he departs soon.

He undoubtedly does not feature in the Spaniard’s plans for the upcoming season, especially if he has the likes of Paul Dummett ahead of him in the pecking order for a place in the first team.

Benitez will not want to use him unless he really has to, which is not exactly ideal – but that is the manager’s fault for not bringing in any cover in his position.

Lazaar undoubtedly wants to be playing regular football again and the only way he is going to achieve that in the near future is by joining Genoa.

Having a shot at the first team would have been his aim, but now that does not look likely to happen, he would thrive at at club who appreciates his contribution.

United must speed the transfer along for everybody’s benefit, but they must do it soon.
