Some Newcastle United fans on social media destroyed midfielder Mohamed Diame for his performance during the 0-0 draw with Cardiff City on Saturday.

The 31-year-old central played the full 90 minutes against Neil Warnock’s side but supporters on Twitter shared their disappointment over his performance with one even claiming that the midfielder had helped ruin his weekend.

Diame was a regular fixture of Rafa Benitez’s side in the second half of last season and ended his 2017/18 campaign having played 31 games, scoring twice, as a result.

OPINION

It seems Magpies supporters fear that the Diame who started last season has returned and it won’t be long before he is dropped. The powerful midfielder, who earns £45,000-a-week at St James Park (Source: Spotrac), was woeful during the first-half of his 2017/18 campaign before appearing to transform into an important player for his side around the start of the year. However it seems for whatever reason Diame doesn’t excel in the early stages of the season as it’s hard to disagree with fans who believe he was back to being a liability in the heart of their midfield. While the 31-year-old helps provide his side with additional defensive cover as he regularly tracks back and is strong in the challenge, his distribution of the ball regularly undoes all his good work. It’ll be interesting to see if Diame can regain his form from the second half of last season quickly as his team certainly need him to.
