Newcastle United are interested in signing West Bromwich Albion defender Kieran Gibbs, according to the Daily Mail.

The national newspaper claim that while the Magpies are keen on the left-back whose current deal earns him £55,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac), he could be beyond their current budget.

The Daily Mail report that while Gibbs is on the Magpies’ radar, the Premier League are currently in talks over signing PSG’s Stanley N’Soki who can play as a left-back or a centre-back.

Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio previously reported via his personal website that Torino had contacted WBA about Gibbs and were considering proposing a loan deal which would have a buyout clause in order to acquire his services this summer.

OPINION

It seems the Magpies are in the hunt for Gibbs but that the Mail believe their chances are getting him are already slim ahead of them making an offer. However based on Di Marzio’s report, who is extremely reliable, if Torino think a loan deal is possible for Gibbs then surely the Magpies should think the same. While Rafa Benitez’s side haven’t had the best of luck dealing with the Baggies this summer, as proved by the fact Salomon Rondon is still not a Magpies player despite the Premier League’s side interest being constantly reported, surely Gibbs should be an achievable option. The 28-year-old left footer played 36 times for WBA last season and managed to put in some decent performances to try and help his side avoid relegation. As Gibbs was unable to see his side stay in the Premier League last season then he might even consider lowering his wage demands in order to join the Magpies and secure Premier League football for the upcoming season.
