Newcastle United’s summer recruit Ki Sung-Yueng has been praised by his international teammate Heung Min-Son, who admitted that he is a “very good signing” for the Magpies.

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son has been full of praise for his South Korea teammate Ki, who arrived at St James’ Park earlier this summer on a free transfer from Swansea City.

He was quoted by the Evening Standard as saying: “At the World Cup he did very well and was our captain. He injured his knee but his move to Newcastle is very good and I’m looking forward to playing against him. It’s the same as last season when we played them away first game.”

He went on to say: “He is a very good player. He can change the side, shoot, make a good pass. He doesn’t lose a lot of balls. He is a very good signing for them. It is a very good move for him as well. He will be able to play more football than he did at Swansea. I think he is already enjoying Newcastle with his family.”

OPINION

Son is right to heap the praise on his international teammate Ki, as he could end up being an excellent signing for the Toon. A player of his quality deserves to be playing in the Premier League rather than the Championship, where he got relegated with the Swans, and the fact Newcastle signed him on a free transfer will likely turn out to be a huge coup for Benitez. He did not get enough playing time at Swansea, but his talent will be fully utilised by Benitez this season, even if it is from the bench. He already has the likes of Jonjo Shelvey in the centre of midfield, but there is no reason why the South Korea international cannot challenge him for that coveted spot. Should he make an impact on Tyneside, the Swans will massively regret letting him leave – especially on a free transfer, where they could have recouped some cash for his services.
