Journalist Lee Ryder has revealed that winger Rolando Aarons is Newcastle’s most likely departure on European deadline day.

The Chronicle’s chief Newcastle writer tweeted on his personal Twitter account that Aarons would be the one Magpies player, if any, to leave the club on Friday.

He went on to say that the club would need assurances over playing time in order to sanction loan moves for defender Jamie Sterry and winger Callum Roberts.

He also revealed that there was no offer on the table at present for goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, despite the 21-year-old being keen to gain more experience out on loan.

OPINION

A move away for Aarons would make sense at this point, with the youngster unlikely to get much first team football at St James’ Park this season. His path to the first team is blocked by the likes of Jacob Murphy, Matt Ritchie, Kenedy and Christian Atsu, and in truth the sun has probably set on his career on Tyneside. A move away would be best for him and Newcastle both. Sterry started the Magpies’ most recent game against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, so Benitez clearly rates him reasonably highly; first team football would be good for him. Roberts has already enjoyed two loan spells away from the club at Gateshead and Kilmarnock, so Newcastle are probably looking to up the level of his next stint out on loan. The Woodman situation is unfortunate as the young man clearly wants to play regular football. He’s not going to get that game time at Newcastle at the moment so a loan move would’ve made sense, but unfortunately it seems like nothing has materialised.
