Some Newcastle United fans reacted on social media to their side being drawn against Nottingham Forest in the second round of the EFL Cup.

The Magpies’ official website confirmed on Thursday that the club were set to play Nottingham Forest in the week commencing Monday 27th of August after being drawn away to the Championship side.

The news caused many Magpies fans to show their pessimistic side with one stating that there is always next year while another simply urged Rafa Benitez not to field a weaken side for the game.

OPINION

It seems while several fans used being drawn against Forest to take a dig at Jack Colback others are having a flashback to last season. The Magpies faced the Championship side at exactly the same stage of the tournament during their 2017/18 campaign and went out after losing 3-2 in extra time. While some supporters are no doubt hoping for revenge it seems others are resigned to already suffering a cup upset to a lower-ranked opposition in order to focus on other competitions. It would be nice if Benitez’s side mounted a successful cup run this season but given that their squad already looks a little short in certain areas then perhaps it’s not worth risking stretching the team across multiple competitions. However that said, while others are predicting disappointment, the Magpies might actually do enough this season to at least over come Forest in the tournament. If not then at least fans of Benitez’s team can bask in the glory that at least Colback, who joined the Championship side from the Mapgies this summer, is unlikely to be on the pitch as he is only on loan.
