A section of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to express their frustration after striker Dwight Gayle scored his first goal for West Bromwich Albion after he joined the club on loan.
The 27-year-old netted in the Baggies’ 7-1 thrashing of Queen’s Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon, which came hours after United registered a goalless draw with Cardiff City.
Newcastle’s former frontman joined West Brom in a loan swap deal with Salomon Rondon earlier this summer, bagging just six goals in 38 appearances for Rafa Benitez’ side in the 2017/2018 campaign.
United fans appeared to be exasperated following Gayle’s exploits against QPR, especially as their club failed to score against the Premier League newbies despite earning a penalty. Some comments included “can this day get any more frustrating” and “shouldn’t have let Gayle go.”
Nothing but Newcastle has rounded up some of the best tweets below:
Ironic today isn't it. Swap Rondon for Gayle. Gayle scores, Rondon doesn't play. Get rid of Mitro over Joselu. Mitro scores. What's the point of replacing these 2 and playing our worst striker? #nufc

Gayle and Mitro score. Joselu labours up front. Rondon warms the wood seats. Fans have a right to question some decisions. #nufc

Mitro, Gayle, Ings all making things happen with their teams. Is it Rafas coaching stopping our former players? Ings would have been a snip at £20m. What the hell is Rafa thinking #nufc

OPINION
Newcastle fans seem very frustrated that Gayle has scored his first goal for West Brom, which has undoubtedly led them to question why the club let him go, if Rondon cannot even start. Not being able to score a goal against a newly-promoted team is a rather worrying sign, and it does raise some doubts about the transfer business the club have conducted this summer. They have only mustered one goal so far, which does not bode well for the rest of the season. If Gayle continues to score, then West Brom may want him on a permanent basis – and that could potentially end up being a major blow for Newcastle if their new strikers do not come up to scratch. They have brought in two, which has obviously raised United fans’ expectation of what they can expect in front of goal this term, but so far, Rondon and Muto have not lived up to that. Hopefully, they can start to improve, otherwise the supporters will be incredibly envious of West Brom.
