Newcastle United Under-23s thrashed rivals Sunderland 5-0 at St. James’ Park on Monday night, and many fans have taken to Twitter to praise the performance of midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Goals from Owen Bailey, Cal Roberts, Elias Sorensen and a double from Luke Charman saw the Magpies romp to a huge win over their bitter rivals, to earn their first points of the Premier League 2 campaign.

Some fans have now praised midfielder Longstaff for his accomplished display in the centre of the park, with some calling for him to be promoted to the first-team soon.

Nothing but Newcastle have rounded up some of the best tweets:

OPINION

These fans are obviously keen to see some of the Newcastle youth players handed a chance in the senior set-up, and Longstaff is certainly one of those pushing for such a breakthrough. The central midfielder ran the show for the Magpies on the night, with his passing looking particularly impressive. One highlight was a perfectly weighted ball over the top for Luke Charman to score their third on the night, with the pass reminiscent of a certain Jonjo Shelvey. If Longstaff continues this kind of form in PL2 then there is no reason why he will not be handed a chance in the first-team by Rafa Benitez. Central midfield is certainly an area where the senior team are lacking numbers, with Shelvey and Mo Diame backed up by Ki Sung-yueng and Isaac Hayden, who is suspended and has also been linked with a move away. To get an academy player in the first-team this season would be a big achievement for the club, and Longstaff is definitely pushing to be that man.
