Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg claimed that Craig Pawson was right to send Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden off against Cardiff City on Saturday.

The 43-year-old delivered his verdict on the incident and shared that while Pawson was right about the Magpies midfielder, he should have sent Kenedy as well as Bluebirds midfielder Harry Arter off as well during the game.

Clattenburg claimed that Kenedy should have seen red for an off-the-ball incident while Arter should have received his marching orders for a cynical foul which he made to stop the Magpies going on the attack.

“Craig Pawson got one red card right during the goalless draw between Cardiff and Newcastle but he missed two others,” wrote Clattenburg for the Daily Mail.

“His decision to dismiss Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden was correct – and a good call – but I was very surprised he did not send off Harry Arter and Kenedy for violent conduct.

“Both players kicked their opponents, Newcastle’s Kenedy in an off-the-ball incident which Pawson has obviously failed to see, while Cardiff’s Arter was a cynical foul to stop a break, but it was excessive force and should have seen red.

“Pawson needs to improve his detection of these bad challenges if he is to be considered for the top international matches. He got the Phil Jagielka red-card decision correct last weekend, but you can’t miss obvious reds such as Kenedy and Arter. “

OPINION

It’s hard to argue with Clattenburg’s view on the three incidents during the Magpies’ 0-0 draw with Neil Warnock’s side. The decision to issue a red card to Hayden was clearly the right one as his challenge on Josh Murphy was reckless and could have injured the Bluebirds’ player. It’s also easy to see that Kenedy was lucky to stay on the pitch as he clearly appeared to kick-out at Victor Camarasa and you would think that if any of the officials had seen the incident clearly then a red card would have quickly followed. Given that the Brazilian ending up staying on the pitch to the very end and missing a potential match-winning penalty for his side then it’s easy to see why some Magpies fans may have in hindsight wished Kenedy would have left the field for that incident. However then again it would have been nicer if Rafa Benitez had just opted to sub the winger as he did have a terrible time on Saturday. Also Clattenburg was right to point out that Cardiff should have been reduced to 10-men during the game as Arter’s tackle was just as bad to watch as Hayden’s was.
