Championship giants Aston Villa are considering making a shock loan move for Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark, according to the Bristol Post.

The newspaper reports that Steve Bruce’s side are weighing up a bid for the Republic of Ireland international, who faces competition for places at St James’s Park from new arrivals Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez this season.

The 28-year-old began his career at Villa Park, making 159 appearances for the Villans in all competitions, before moving to Tyneside in 2016.

Now it appears that the Birmingham outfit could make a move to bring the defender back to the club, with loan moves still a possibility for the Championship high flyers.

OPINION

Aston Villa have made a terrific start to the season, with two wins from two thus far, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be making any more moves to improve their squad. A summer of uncertainty over ownership has left Bruce clutching at straws in terms of new arrivals, but with the club’s takeover now complete the manager should receive some backing in the loan market at least. Clark would represent a nice temporary signing for the club, but does it make sense for Newcastle? The Irishman started the club’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, ahead of new signing Schar, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to keep the Swiss international and fellow new boy Fernandez out of the team for long. There’s only one place available alongside captain Jamaal Lascelles, and Benitez will feel pressure to fill it with one his new signings. A return to Villa Park on loan could come at the ideal time for Clark, then, but we’ll have to wait and see how serious Villa’s interest in the player is.
