Newcastle United are set to seal a £9 million swoop for FSV Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on their website that United are pressing ahead with a move for the prolific Japanese forward, and are hoping to agree upon an initial £9 million fee with the German outfit for his transfer.

The report says “talks are advancing” and that Newcastle are hopeful a deal can be struck.

Boss Rafa Benitez has been seeking out reinforcements in attack after also chasing West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, but are also looking to sign the 26-year-old after his impressive performance for Japan in this summer’s World Cup.

OPINION

Rafa Benitez has made a wise choice in chasing after Muto, and fans will be relieved to hear that the club may be closing in on a deal for a top-level striker. He netted ten goals in the Bundesliga in the 2017/2018 campaign and that could only be set to rise should be complete the move to Tyneside. He was one of Japan’s stand out players in this summer’s tournament, almost upsetting Belgium in the round of 16 by going 2-0 up. He will thirve in the Premier League environment, and will provide the goals Newcastle need to maintain their top ten finish once again next term, and his potential link-up with Rondon could be lethal if they paired up. United are heading in the right direction with this potential swoop, and at a cheap fee of £9 million, they would have been mad to pass up on it. This is great business by the club, and it will be exciting to see how Muto will perform for them should the move run smoothly.
