Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has obviously prioritised the need for a striker amid interest in West Bromwich Albion forward Salomon Rondon, but there is no guarantee that he will land him as the conclusion of the transfer window edges ever closer.

The Spaniard should be considering other options and not put all of the club’s eggs in one basket with Rondon, as there is an array of attacking talent that he could potentially choose from.

According to West Ham insider ‘ExWHUemployee’ on Twitter, the Hammers are keen on Corinthians hitman Angel Romero – and this is a move that United manager Benitez should hijack to get their transfer activity back on track.

There is no doubting that the Toon have been lagging behind their league rivals in this window, but that could be about to change if they gatecrash their interest in the Paraguay international.

The 26-year-old helped his side to a title victory in the Serie A division in Brazil in 2015 and 2017, as well as the Campeonato Paulista last year.

Romero may not have the highest of goal records – he only netted five goals in the last two seasons – but he definitely has the potential to be a prolific striking force for Newcastle, who are in desperate need of extra attacking threat.

Without a sufficient threat going forward, the Magpies will risk slipping down from their impressive tenth-placed finish last season upon their return to the top-flight, as there would not be enough talent to genuinely compete.

The possible addition of the 13-capped international would go some way into improving this problem, along with other attacking targets.

The 5″7 flyer (source: Transfermarkt) does not have the capabilities of being solely relied upon for goals, which is why he would need support in the final third to ensure he makes the most of the goal scoring opportunities that come his way.

Benitez now needs to pounce for the striker on their rivals’ radar to ensure a successful transfer window.
