Newcastle United are discussing a potential £10million deal for Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron with the player’s representatives, according to The Sun.

The British tabloid report that the Magpies face competition for the 24-year-old’s services from West Ham and that losing out on Almiron to the club’s Premier League rivals is only likely to speed up Rafa Benitez’s exit.

The Sun report that the Magpies face a battle to convince Atlanta to sell their star player as the MLS season is well underway but that the American club could be open to selling him in the New Year.

OPINION

This report is a roller-coaster of emotions if you’re a Magpies supporter as signing Almiron would be a fantastic move but the threat of Benitez leaving is not something you’d want to consider. The attacking midfielder has been involved in 19 goals so far in 2018 as he has scored eight, while assisting 11, to help Atlanta impressively sit top of the Eastern Conference. The MLS side are right to hold on to their key player as his exit could dramatically affect the team’s fortunes due to how pivotal he is to the way they play. However if the Magpies can somehow get Atlanta to sell Almiron for £10million anytime soon then it will be a great move for the Premier League side. The 24-year-old is keen on a move to England and his attacking talents would surely see Benitez’s side flourish in front of goal. If the Magpies can’t convince Atlanta this summer then at the very least, they need to return for him in January.
