Newcastle United are weighing up a move for Deportivo La Coruna centre-back Fabian Schar, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper report that the Magpies have contacted the Segunda Division club about a deal for the Switzerland international, who recently played at the World Cup.

The Chronicle claim that Schar is seeking a move away from Deportivo following their relegation from La Liga, with Rafa Benitez keen on signing players available for a low fee.

Schar, who stands at 6ft 1in [Transfermarkt], has 42 caps for the Switzerland national team.

OPINION

Benitez is obviously looking to sign a new centre-back in the coming days, with the Magpies linked with several enforcers recently. Other names mentioned have been Swansea defender Federico Fernandez and free agent Diego Reyes, and Schar has now been added to their wishlist. In truth, whoever is brought in will likely have to settle for a place on the bench to begin with. Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune were brilliant last season, and will likely start the season as Benitez’s preferred partnership at the heart of defence. Schar would certainly be a good addition, and the promising thing for Newcastle fans here is that there is still the prospect of signing quality players at low prices. Benitez is the best man for the job in terms of scouring the market for bargains, and it looks like he is doing all he can to secure the players the squad needs before the end of the window on August 9th.
