Newcastle may be priced out when it comes to landing players in the final week of the transfer market, even though they are set to generate cash from Aleksandar Mitrovic’s sale, as a result of it being paid in instalments, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper report that manager Rafael Benitez is frustrated that he cannot spend whatever money the club has on whatever player he chooses, and does not understand why his budget is not clear.

It is stated that the Spaniard has to go through layers of the club’s hierarchy in order to land the players he wants and that the issue with funding is that money coming in is often spread over time.

Journalist Chris Waugh, who is said to have spoken to managing director Lee Charnley, states that Newcastle rebuff suggestions about making profits from transfers year on year, with fees from previous exits, including Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum, still being paid.

The Magpies have made four signings this summer in the shape of Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung Yeung, Kenedy and Fabian Schar, while a swoop for Yoshinori Muto is confirmed to be subject to a work permit.

OPINION

Newcastle have been priced out on prime transfer targets time and time again in this window, but this key information really puts it into perspective as to why they cannot not often afford the players they want. No manager should have to go through layers of the club’s management to land the players that he chooses – but the money is not even there to do that anyway. Most owners would inform their manager of the transfer budget and what they have available to spend, but this is not the case with Newcastle, and as a result they have not got all the names Benitez would have wanted at St James’ Park. The club seem to have been heading in the right direction after signing Yoshinori Muto and potentially landing Salomon Rondon from West Brom, but these facts go to show that issues at the club need to be fixed imminently. The fact that they have to wait a while to get the full instalmentsĀ for players that they have sold is also frustrating, especially when Benitez would have wanted to splash out.
