A West Ham Insider has claimed that a deal for Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles is “dead” after a reported £25million bid was rejected.

Sky Sports had claimed that West Ham were serious about signing the centre-back and had tabled a £20million bid rising to £25million.

However, this was rejected with Newcastle adamant that the player wasn’t for sale.

Now, exWHUemployee, a very reliable source of West Ham information, has said that the deal is dead, with West Ham now only looking for loan players after making a numbr of high-profile signings.

OPINION

Newcastle fans were laughing after Sky reported that West Ham had bid up to £25million for a player that they think is worth at least double that. However, they were also worried that Mike Ashley might sell their star player if an improved offer came in. After West Ham smashed their transfer record for Felipe Anderson, and a string of other expensive signings, they don’t have to worry about the Hammers anymore. A deal for Lascelles at this stage in the transfer window always seemed unlikely. Rafa Benitez has said he wants to build his team around the player and while Ashley obviously loves money, he’s not so stupid that he’d sell a player that would seriously disrupt the pre-season for his side. If Lascelles was sold from underneath him, Benitez would have been seriously unhappy and might even have considered his future. There’s no guarantee that other teams won’t come in with an offer for a very talented player, but this avenue has been sealed shut – and that will make Newcastle fans very happy.
