Newcastle United have been left frustrated in their pursuit of defender Federico Fernandez after Swansea demanded £10million for the Argentina international, according to the Sun.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Magpies are keen to take the 6″2 (source: Transfermarkt) defender on loan for the duration of next season, but the Swans are not so eager about the idea and want £10 million for his services instead.

Swansea have refused the offer of a loan switch, and are prepared to ask United for a larger fee for the Argentine enforcer, more than they wanted from Russian side Krasnador.

OPINION

This news that Newcastle will need to pay a £10 million fee in order to land Fernandez is sure to be a major blow to boss Rafa Benitez. He is already on a tight transfer budget having not recieved much backing from owner Mike Ashley, so a loan move for him seemed to be the most logical option for the Spaniard. He is resigned to the fact that current centre-back Jamaal Lascelles may leave in this transfer window, and he needs reinforcements to ensure that he is not light on numbers in that position come the start of the season. Fabian Schar has already signed for the club, and Benitez definitely needs a back-up in case one of his star player departs. £10 million may not seem like the largest fee for a player, but it is for a club working on shoestring budget – and the only way Benitez will land his target is if he pays him the fee they are demanding.
