Newcastle United are interested in signing Liverpool attacker Divock Origi on loan, according to the Northern Echo.

The regional newspaper claim that the Reds are understood to be willing to consider letting the 23-year-old forward go out on loan as he has struggled to make an impact at Anfield.

The Northern Echo report that while the Magpies are keen on Reds forward Danny Ings who is available to purchase, the club are way more interested in recruiting Origi on a temporary basis due to Ings’ £20million price tag.

Origi was loaned out to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg by Liverpool last season and scored seven goals, while creating three, in the 36 appearances he made for them.

OPINION

Given Ings’ poor injury record and mammoth price tag then it makes sense that the Magpies are looking at signing Origi instead. The 6ft 1in attacker (Source: Soccerbase) may have only managed to score 12 goals in his 51 Premier League outings for the Reds, but he has shown glimpses of his potential. Origi, who was involved in 10 goals for Wolfsburg during his 2017/18 campaign, is a much more versatile option for Rafa Benitez to pursue when compared to Ings. The 23-year-old is comfortable playing as a centre-forward as well as a winger on either flank which means the Spanish manager would have options on how to use him in his team. Given Benitez’ reputation for getting the best out of his players it would be no surprise if Origi was able to flourish at St James Park under the experienced manager. Origi is a pacey prospect, with silky dribbling skills but just needs to start making the right decisions in front of goal. If the Magpies did successfully sign the 23-year-old on loan then it wouldn’t be a bad move.
