Newcastle United are plotting a loan swoop for Swansea City defender Federico Fernandez, according to The Sun.

The national newspaper state that Rafa Benitez is looking into a loan deal for the 29-year-old centre-back despite the player being available to purchase for £6million.

The Sun report that despite the Championship side being willing to permanently part with Fernandez, Benitez is hoping they consider sending him on a year-long loan.

OPINION

The Swans are no doubt very keen to get Fernandez off their wage bill following their relegation from the Premier League as he currently earns £43,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac). If the Magpies are willing to cover all his wages then perhaps the Swans will sanction a temporary exit for their defender but that seems only a possibility if the player has no other suitors chasing him. While The Sun don’t report that the Magpies have competition for his services, it seems likely they’re be other clubs keen on him given his reasonable price tag. Fernandez featured 34 times in the Premier League last season for the Swans and did shine for his club on few occasions despite their struggles. Given that Fernandez can only play as a centre-back then it seems likely Benitez is looking at him as a possible replacement for Chancel Mbemba. The Chronicle previously reported that the current Magpies defender was still trying to push through a potential move to FC Porto this summer.
