Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino is set for a medical at Real Sociedad within days as his exit draws nearer, and some fans have taken to Twitter to slam the 22-year-old for his decision to leave the club after just one season.
As reported by Sky Sports News reported Keith Downie on Twitter, Merino is set for a medical ‘by the weekend’ after the La Liga club activated his £10million release clause.
Mikel Merino is on the verge of return to Spain with Real Sociedad. We understand the La Liga side have activated the midfielder’s £10m release clause and he’ll have a medical by the weekend.

Merino joined the Magpies last season on an initial loan from Borussia Dortmund before a permanent move was sealed in October, with the Spain youth international going on to make 25 appearances in all competitions in an up-and-down season.
Some Newcastle fans have now taken to Twitter to react to the development, with many bidding the 22-year-old good riddance after his decision to walk away after just one campaign.
Nothing but Newcastle have rounded up some of the best tweets:

Or he was being switched on incase it didn't work out and he had an easy get out, which ever way I for one wish him all the best with his career

Good riddance there must be a reason he has cheap clauses wherever he goes

Can’t make him stay. It’s sad, because he showed so much potential in the early part of last season. But he clearly has issues – he was only at Dortmund for a short period as well.

But he doesn’t want to stay!

If merino isnt prepared to stay and fight for his place, 10 million is a good price.
Cant be doing with players not wanting to be here tbh #nufc— Simon Nicols (@sinicols) July 5, 2018
OPINION
Despite it initially looking like Merino would be staying at the club, it looks as though the pressure of his failed first season in England has got to him as he nears an exit from Newcastle. Merino is clearly in need of a club environment where he plays no matter what, and his form last season was simply not good enough for that to happen. The youngster is obviously not willing to fight for his place either, and that seems to be the main point of contention for fans here. Merino has a load of talent, but he also needs to buck up his ideas if he is going to live up to his potential, which unfortunately will now not happen at St. James’ Park.
