Newcastle United legend Malcolm Macdonald slammed Dwight Gayle and Joselu for their goal returns and insisted that the Magpies needed a new centre-forward as well as a new back-up striker.

The retired forward shared that he simply wanted to know where the club’s goals were expected to come from next season as the club lacked a goalscorer.

Macdonald, who affectionately is better known as Supermac, stated that the Magpies simply won’t get by next season if they opt to rely on Ayoze Perez to score the lion share of the club’s goals.

“I’m sorry to keep banging on, but Ashley makes you do that, what I want to know is where the goals are going to come from next season,” said Macdonald in his column for the Chronicle.

“Ayoze Perez isn’t an out-and-out striker. He’s a No 10 yet he was the only player to reach double figures in the last campaign. United cannot get away with that again.

“The returns of Dwight Gayle and Joselu were poor in the extreme so a new centre-forward is a MUST. Plus a back-up striker in my opinion.

“As an old No 9 goalscorer myself I know I’m biased, but I’m also right.”

OPINION

Supermac apologised for once again bringing up the club’s need for a striker in his weekly column but the fact it’s still an issue he can address is the real problem. The Magpies need to welcome a forward sooner or later as you can feel the negative vibes surrounding the club as fans become increasingly worried that the ball is about to be dropped in another transfer window. Macdonald is absolutely right to suggest that Gayle and Joselu’s goal returns last season were ridiculously bad and it’s no surprise to hear that he thinks two new attackers are needed because of it. There is no denying that better options are needed upfront at the club as the Magpies only scored 39 league goals last season, the question is whether new capable attackers will be recruited. At this point Magpies supporters will just be thankful to see one new forward arrive at St James Park even if MacDonald is clearly right about two new options being needed.
