Newcastle United have told attacker Ivan Toney to find another club with the Magpies aiming to clear out their side’s fringe players, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper claim that the 5ft 8in Magpies forward (Transfermarkt) who has been left out of the first team squad has had his future at the club made clear to him.

The Chronicle report that while Toney has been given instructions to secure his exit from St James Park by finding a new club, fellow fringe player Achraf Lazaar is set to stay and fight for his place.

OPINION

Toney’s exit doesn’t come as much of a surprise as the 22-year-old has managed to only feature four times for the senior side. The forward who has had recent loan spells at Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic will have no problems finding a team in the lower division to acquire his services. Toney has previously proven himself to be a decent goal threat in League One, having scored 25 goals in 89 appearances in England’s third-tier and this should see him have a whole host of clubs chase his services. While it’s always a shame to see a young player depart the Magpies, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t the right decision to make regarding Toney. The attacker’s Magpies contract doesn’t expire until 2020 (Transfermarkt) so hopefully there will be a small fee received upon him departing the club in order for there to be at little boost for Rafa Benitez’s current transfer budget.
