Newcastle United have drafted Adam Armstrong, Cal Roberts and Sean Longstaff to train with the first-team squad for pre-season, according to the Chronicle

The northern newspaper state that Rafa Benitez opted to promote the trio to first-team training duties as his squad was depleted with a few players being allowed extra time off due to the World Cup.

The Chronicle report that the promising trio of Armstrong, Roberts and Longstaff could all see themselves play their way on to the plane for the pre-season trip to Ireland next week.

OPINION

While Benitez has promoted them due to a lack of players being available for pre-season currently, it’s still good news regarding the promising trio. Armstrong, 21, is the most high-profile name out of three players as he has previously featured 21 times for the first-team. However the inclusion of Roberts and Longstaff is equally exciting as Benitez will witness firsthand the performances of two talented youngsters currently on the books. Roberts, who plays a winger, is one of the few players who survived the club’s mass axing of a lot of it’s U-23 squad this summer and that’s because of his promising talent. It was previously stated by the Chronicle that Benitez would look to loan out the 20-year-old winger in the upcoming season and hopefully offers come flooding in for him. Longstaff is also set to be loaned out, as stated by Chronicle, but hopefully the 20-year-old central midfielder makes a memorable impression on Benitez before departing on a temporary basis.
