Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting with disappointment and regret after the club confirmed the departure of Mikel Merino.

The Magpies announced the talented central midfielder’s departure on their official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

The Spaniard joins Spanish side Real Sociedad for a fee of around £10million, according to Chronicle Live.

One fan said that the club will regret selling the Spainiard in a few years time.

Nothing but Newcastle have rounded up the best tweets from a section of Newcastle supporters reacting to Merino’s sale:

OPINION

The reported fee is very low for someone of Mikel Merino’s ability, £10million is a real bargain. Whoever agreed to that being included in the transfer has made a big mistake. He will be a loss to Newcastle because he’s got real quality in his left-foot and had huge potential, which he’ll now develop in Spain rather than England. It will be a good move for the player, being able to move back his home country and play regularly in La Liga, but Magpies fans are probably wishing that he could have stayed at St. James Park for another few years at least.
