Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has made no secret of his wishes to bring in another striker in this transfer window, which is desperately needed after their lack of activity in the window.

The Magpies have all but signed striker Yoshinori Muto – who starred at the World Cup this summer – which is subject to the Japan international obtaining a work permit, according to the club’s Twitter – but he needs another forward to link-up with in order to bring the best out of him.

Step forward striker Moussa Marega from Porto, who also plays internationally for Mali.

The Daily Mail reported West Ham’s interest in the frontman on Thursday (26 July), but United need to hijack their Premier League rival’s pursuit of him for themselves so they can form a lethal partnership with Muto.

Newcastle’s attack has somewhat been lacking lately, and they risk posing no threat at all if Benitez throws Muto up front by himself – while he is a gifted footballer, he will struggle leading the line on his own and the potential addition of Marega will help bring the best out of him, as well as sharing the goal scoring burden.

Marega can prove to be troublesome for defenders, a quality which he demonstrated in Porto’s title-winning run last season. However, for someone who stands at six foot (source: Transfermarkt), he also has the pace to outrun them, which resulted in his 22 goals last term.

This statistic, combined with Muto’s ten goals – which can only get higher – has the ability to tear up the Premier League in the 2018/2019 campaign, and reinvigorate Benitez’ lack of attack.

Striker Dwight Gayle could potentially be part of a swap deal for Salomon Rondon, but Benitez should pass up on him to sign Marega instead, whose link-up with Muto would be lethal.

Newcastle now have the opportunity to create a strike force that could be the envy of several top-flight clubs – and they need to brush West Ham aside in order to do so.
