Some Newcastle fans have been reacting with positive comments on social media after a report stated the club was ready to match the £16.5million release clause for West Brom striker Salomon Rondon.
As reported by The Sun, Newcastle are ready to trigger the escape clause for Rondon, which would break the club’s transfer record of £16million, which they paid for Michael Owen.
The Venezuelan scored 10 goals in 40 appearances for Darren Moore’s side last season, but that couldn’t stop the West Midlands club being relegated from the Premier League (TransferMarkt).
One Toon supporter suggested that Rondon is better than their current strikers Gayle and Joselu.
Nothing But Newcastle has rounded up a selection of tweets by Magpies supporters regarding the reported Rondon interest:
Well I know Stoke fans were annoyed to lose Joselu last summer and look how he's done for us but Rondon is better than Gayle and Joselu #nufc https://t.co/6MJdjr2MeA

If we start the season with a front three of Townsend Rondon Kenedy I'll be happy. #NUFC

If those reports are true about Rafa being willing to sign a new contract as long as the transfer record is smashed then it's a no brainer. Plea, Townsend, Kenedy or even Rondon. Just go out and get out @NUFC

Cool, cheers for that. I get why Plea is being looked at, but I thought Rondon would be better suited as the lone striker Rafa would go for. Plus he scored almost double figures in 3 very poor WBA sides…

OPINION
This would be a good move from Salomon Rondon’s perspective. He’s worked and battled hard in some really poor West Bromwich Albion sides over the last few years. He’s been feeding off scraps and has had really poor service, but the fact he still managed to score 10 goals last season proves that he’s got it in him to score more goals in a more creative team (TransferMarkt). Newcastle will give him both more and better service from wide areas, which will provide him with more chances from aerial duels, an area in which he excels. With West Brom’s relegation, the Venezuelan will want to stay in the Premier League and prove his quality, Benitez is looking like he may take advantage of that.
